.....I was doodling today at the Conference during a section of the discussion that seemed to mainly be a proverbial dog chasing its tail. I resisted checking my cell phone for e-mail and Facebook and just started putting words together. A couple of lines that came together suggested a crossover sonnet for the Aelianora Sonnet Story that has been hanging out there for a while.

.....You can definitely tell that it was not done at the same time as the other four sonnets. It is much more 'airy' than the other sonnets. It has some words that don't quite fit. But I'll take it as it was interesting how it just sort of 'put itself together' without a whole lot of conscious beating by me, which is my usual process.

.....I'll keep it and see if I can smooth it out some at some later date like what happened with the fourth sonnet. :-)

.....The new fifth sonnet:

She tames a land of chaos in grasp tight,
Wild nature green with healthy teaming life.
A growth she nurtures with Law gleaming bright.
Her victory a harvest snatched from strife.

The ordered rows of vines and bushy leaves,
Thrum vibrantly in the warm summer heat.
Their chorus in time to a song she weaves.
The words she teaches with fresh water meet.

High notes are taken by goats prancing near.
Low notes are felt in waves from Mother Earth.
A gathering that sustains through the year.
A world she rules to capture Life's birth.

She holds a magic protecting from harm.
All who do thrive on her life-giving farm.

.....Which fits into the fabric of the story as follows:

When her clear sweet call rings out through the air,
A drumbeat rolls across the grassy field.
As goats greet mistress fair with milk so rare,
White gold great treasure from all her friends yield.

Soft silken nectar made warm in the flame.
Ambrosia will condense in many curds.
Withdrawn are waters motion quick to tame.
Wild drink as once was now in gathered herds.

The cloth of gold now wraps the wheel with love.
That is enshrined in her home of deep rest.
Long sleep is watched, signs of hope from above.
Brought forth in celebration when age crest.

From Capra sisters joyful gifts they give.
The nourishment a luscious way to live.

Low notes are felt in waves from Mother Earth.
A gathering that sustains through the year.
A world she rules to capture Life's birth.

She holds a magic protecting from harm.
All who do thrive on her life-giving farm.

The intricate fiber paths will hold fast.
They find the choices made in cloth tills.
Our seamstress grips the intuitions cast.
And guides blades to arrange life as she wills.

Before her lies the scattered complex shapes.
The geomancy she will read for all.
And pieces rise to cover as she drapes.
To be assembled for the needful call.

A metal sliver holds thread fiber dear.
Cloth of great work is given flame of life.
Two lives are led as finer thread draws near.
Embellishing all cloth with beauty rife.

The endless tapestry dense with its law.
She tames with skill and needles steel which gnaw.

The evil, Ignorance, thrives as foe dark.
Insidious coils smother Learning's flame.
Our warrior of thought with spear will mark.
A guide on human's quest to find his name.

She moves forth with inquisitive mind bright.
Through sources obscure she researches deep.
Dark knowledge made clear by Athena's light.
Announcing to all learning she does reap.

The sharing of skills and fruits of her mind.
She eagerly shows what she can to all.
Her lectures thrill and make more of her kind,
And produce works of mastery most tall.

Her passion is for beauty in all things.
Both of the mind and of the hand all sings.

She stands in support with stern vigilance.
Her evidence of knowledge held on high.
Her voice a call of truth in jubilance,
For all to her bright scholar's light draw nigh.

In tall companionship with Laurel peers.
Her fearsome powers of research at hand.
A mentor strong dispelling all their fears.
A strike on ignorance she will demand.

Her Kingdom to protect she'll ever strive,
Defending with all her ability.
In beauty strong from her fingers do thrive,
As from her mind keen credibility.

.....Five is a good round number, but I'm getting the feeling I'm not quite done with this story just yet. The ending looks pretty good to me. But the beginning transitions still need some work. So at least one more is coming, if not two, at some point. :-)

.....Back in March I posted three Sonnets I'd written in honor of Aelianora's elevation to the Laurel. The goal really being a series of Sonnets on a common theme. Parts of them were rather disjointed and didn't fit. I was toying around with them this week and took apart the really bad Sonnet and reconstructed it. I moved one quatrain out of it and wrote a fourth Sonnet around it and then re-wrote a quatrain for the Sonnet I took apart. Made for a total of four Sonnets.

.....I'm liking how it starts, and liking how the final two are falling together. The newly installed Sonnet is a little disjointed in itself, and still doesn't bridge the gap between the start and the finish. But what is here is better than what it was. I think in the end it'll end up being five or six Sonnets total.

.....Here is the series as it was originally:

.....I was purging a pile of repetitive June Faire notes from 2013 and I ran across my scribblings of a set of sonnets I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] aelianora's Laurel elevation. What was supposed to happen was that I was going to read them as she processed into Court for her ceremony.

.....When I hit Twelfth Night, I could not find the notes. At the same time I was embarrassed, I was also relieved. I was not happy with what I had written. I never am, but it was particularly bad this time. It was the first time I'd tried writing sonnets in a series that continued a single theme. It was more disjointed than usual.

.....But things like that can be fixed if one spends some time on it. So I'm making sure to capture the lines here in the hopes that some day I'll do just that.

.....It's about bedtime and I can't believe the weekend is already done. It went by so fast! :-)

.....Saturday was a pretty good day at the Arts and Sciences Day Camp. I woke up with the beginnings of a migraine. I could feel the nausea coming on and the sparkly tunnel vision was already in full swing. So I dowsed it thoroughly in Tylenol and caffeine and hoped for the best. I'd been pretty good with avoiding food triggers, so it was most likely weather related. They are sometimes easier to control, which seemed to be the case with this one. It never did go away completely, but it stayed relatively mellow. I was able to navigate the day relatively well.

.....Arrived on site at 8:30, Dragon's Laire time. :-) Set out street signs and opened up the Hall. Madrun arrived shortly after we did. At 9AM we were thinking maybe that the Day would be lightly attended, but that feeling went away in a hurry. We had a very full Hall well before Noon.

.....I never did feel fully functional, so I never really picked up anything to really do. I spent most of the day in conversation with a lot of people who filtered through site. Although I still ended up missing a few. I had really wanted to spend at least a little time with [livejournal.com profile] aelianora and catch up on a few things and see what she was thinking about these days. But I never did get the chance. Need to send her an e-mail to make she knows that was not on purpose! :-)

.....Did spend some time in the morning in conversation with Renart, talking about the Kingdom Feast. The possibilities for where it could go are boundless! He has a lot of decisions to make and a vision to really nail down. He also has a very talented Team of people, all full of good ideas of their own. Rather exciting, to be honest.

.....Alys showed up later with her sketches of the Team Haggis III logo. She had three of them. One of them was rather disturbing, a winged sheep on a platter with an apple in its mouth. The second was pretty good, the An Tir Crown with the winged sheep logo on the front. But the third design was the winning design, a can of winged haggis. :-) She has just a couple of things to clean up on it and then she'll send me the .pdf so we can get started on T-Shirts. :-)

.....After lunch, TBT led the charter meeting for the Baronial 'Kingdom Arts & Sciences and Bardic Championship Single Entry Support Group'. She came up with the good idea on the return home from the last KAS / KBC. As a support group we could encourage a larger number of us as we process a single entry for next year's competition. With a support group, including monthly meetings and deadlines, it would be easier to keep to a schedule. There would be people to help with questions and presentation. The whole concept made so much sense I was surprised that I'd never heard of something similar before.

.....There were maybe fifteen or eighteen at the gathering. Plus I know there were a handful of others who couldn't be there that day. So if even half the group makes it to KAS / KBC next year, that's a good ten to twelve entries. Maybe Dragon's Laire could actually have a KAS / KBC Champion for a third year in a row. That would be rather cool. :-)

.....The crowds started shrinking around 3PM and I was starting to get tired by then. The only thing I actually managed to do was a couple of rows of knitting on my introductory knitting project. I also pondered what kind of embroidery I was going to do on a wool bag that Madrun put together for me. It was one of the bag designs that was just completed for Kingdom Largesse to be given at Estrella and has an orange stag on it. I had thought of one of the bags for the last round of largesse, but considering that it took me almost four years to do one of the little bags that TBT put together for Baronial Largesse when she first moved over here, it was probably a good thing I waited for this one. :-)

.....At the end of the day we were supposed to go to Bernie and Tsuruko's house for a birthday gathering in celebration of Bernie's birthday. But the head was still throbbing a little and I was toasted from a long day surrounded by people. So I called Bernie and begged forgiveness. Bernie was gracious, especially after I promised him and Tsuruko a drink at NORWESCON next weekend. :-)

.....NORWESCON in three days! The excitement is definitely starting to hit. :-) Heather received a bath today in preparation. She is also gassed up and about ready to go. Just need to clear out the stuff in the back and she'll be ready for pack up on Wednesday.

.....Made it over to Richard's to drop off the gate funds from the Day Camp and chatted with Rich and Gwen for a little while. Then worked on the chores for the week. Laundry is done. Stuff for work is all set up for tomorrow. I even managed to get a preliminary timeline complete for the Serjeantry Trials this summer and sent it out to everyone. The April Baronial Letter is in progress. So I made some progress today. Just not nearly as much as I would have liked.

.....Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Gene Wilder as the TRUE Willy Wonka, is on the Tele now. It's still a favorite. Although if I don't get to sleep soon, Monday is not going to be much fun at all.

.....The SCA has spoiled me in one regard. When I read something like National Geographic these days I find myself wondering 'Where is the information? This article was a tease!' :-) But even with the excruciatingly small amount of information here, I still found it fascinating.

.....It was on the National Geographic Live Journal Feed.

.....<http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/10/111010-roman-empire-shoes-fort-britain-archaeology-science/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=feed%3a+ng%2fnews%2fnews_main+%28national+geographic+news+-+main%29&utm_content=livejournal#17436>

.....Here is the opening sentence as a teaser: "About 60 pairs of sandals and shoes that once belonged to Roman soldiers have been unearthed at a supermarket construction site in Camelon, Scotland, archaeologists say."

.....What do you think, Aelianora? What does this mean in the bigger picture of the Romans in Brittain? Do you think they stayed longer, formally, than history suggests? I want to hear the details they don't talk about in this article. :-)

.....It's hard to believe that it is already May 1st. It seems like yesterday that it was January!

.....Actually, yesterday was the Arts and Sciences Day Camp at the Odd Fellows Hall in West Bremerton. It was actually a pretty good day of geeking out with others and learning new things. As well as seeing what others were doing. I brought a bin full of things to do. And actually ended up working on a few things, which was rather cool.

.....Saw Deirdre in the morning and was reminded of the bookcases that are currently located at her house. They are the folding rattan Baronial Library bookcases originally donated by THL Inga. They are still usable, but no one seems to want them. And Deridre is rightfully wanting them gone from her place. I need to remember to stop by her house in the next day or so and pick them up. Someone suggested that the Roving Irishmen could use them in setting up their household encampment. I'll ask them if they want them this Tuesday and then confer with Master Ralg and THL Oliver to make sure they are O.K. with them going away.

.....Had a good look at THL Pernell's silk painted banner. She did a good job with it! Her proposed device was nicely rendered on her triangle of silk. She also took some time and patience in painting hers. The colors were all nice and even, as well as vibrant. I made a handful of mistakes on mine, namely not painting the largest color areas in one setting. The areas that I did over time are pretty clearly visible. But it'll work and I'm excited to see it done. Seeing Pernell's definitely was another push into getting my next one done.

.....When things settled down in the afternoon I pulled out my loom and did some cardweaving. THL Madrun watched my method for a few minutes and made a couple of timely suggestions on how to improve the tension on my band by keep a loop of weft available as I turned the card, and then then work on a more even tension as I finished pulled the thread through. It was a very simple trick, but netted immediate results. I could see improvements right away.

.....I hadn't really enjoyed the silk-wool blend when I first pulled everything together on this loom. But things really were moving easily and fast yesterday and I was making quick progress. It was rather enjoyable. I wasn't in love with the color combination of white, black and blue. But I was inspired to hurry up and finish this band so I could warp up a new one. As a matter of fact I was so entranced that I finished the whole thing earlier today. I'll have to figure out a new pattern quickly so I don't lose momentum.

.....Madrun promised a lesson or two when things slow down. I can figure out regular patterns. But I'd love to be able to draft original patterns, or weave them on the fly. I'm just not savvy enough to do that yet (if ever). But we'll have to wait at least until after June Faire before that happens. :-)

.....Spent a little quality time with Aelianora. Not nearly enough, but I don't think I'll ever be able to remedy that one. :-) As usual I'm in awe of all the things she is managing to accomplish these days. Not the least of which is keep Ian employed and focused on the web-site in a manageable capacity. IMPRESSIVE! TBT and I want to meet with Aelianora at some point over the next month to talk about the web-site. TBT had been doing some preliminary work on it before Aelianora took the reins, and has a few ideas she'd like to float. Plus, it is always fun to site and chat. And if Renart does some cooking as well? Bonus! :-)

.....We slept in a little later this morning than we had wanted to. We didn't hit Starbucks until after 10AM. But we did something radical after that. We went to Office Depot and picked up a new computer!

.....OMG! I haven't had a new computer since I moved into this house in 2000. I hadn't realized until today that the computer I have has been doing all my work for me for almost eleven years! I'm sure that is almost ninety in computer progress years (sort of like seventy-seven in dog years :-)). I'm sure I'll feel almost agoraphobic the first time I really start playing on it. Holy Cow! I'll be able to open up the Internet and will be type URL's almost immediately! No more running into other rooms to get chores done while I wait for the Internet to queue up. I don't know how I'll be able to handle it! :-)

.....Ran into Cedric and Brighid today. Then JR, and Tymothy and a bunch of others. Some good conversation was had. But TBT and I had to get the weekly shopping done, so we didn't get to stick around and talk for too long unfortunately. But we did get to congratulate Talon for successfully completing his fourth marathon! That is IMPRESSIVE!

.....Will start making inroads on the May Crown and June Faire 'Action Item' lists this week. Things will move relatively quickly.

.....Have to hit up a few people on Tuesday at Fight Practice for help at May Crown, June Faire and July Coronation. Wednesday is the June Faire Board Meeting. Then Thursday is the May Business Meeting. Another full week.

.....I would have liked to have gone to Druim Doineann's May Pole this Saturday, but have another requirement in the hopper. And considering that every other weekend this month is booked with SCA Activities, I need to keep this weekend open for personal 'go-dos' or else I'll be running to catch up until sometime in late June. Not a good thing.

.....Hmmm, starting to get late. Must get ready to go to work tomorrow.

.....Aaron / Arontius.

.....It's been a handful of days since I updated Live Journal last. Lots of things to think about these days. You wouldn't necessarily think of Holloween as a thoughtful day, but it has become so. :-)

.....Today is [livejournal.com profile] aelianora's birthday. I hope it was a good day for her. I probably should have called, but I didn't think about doing that until just a few minutes ago and don't necessarily want to interrupt her evening.

.....Today is also Catelin Spenser's birthday. It's been over a year now since her death. I miss her quite a bit. I'm still curious as to what she would be saying to me now that I'm about to wear the Coronet as Baron of Dragon's Laire. I'm sure she would have had a great deal of interesting advice for me. :-)

.....Starting to get my brain wrapped around the step-up, in less than two weeks now. The 'to-do' list is still daunting, but the actual ceremony should happen more-or-less with at least a reasonable amount of dignity. Something that was more difficult to achieve than I would have thought. TBT has been knocking herself out with the step-up clothing. I think I'll be wearing better clothes for that one ceremony than I've ever worn to date, either in the 'real world' or the SCA. :-)

.....Tomorrow I have to be in Tacoma at 0800 to check in for Jury Duty at the Federal Courthouse. Not necessarily the best timing as there was a Port Gamble June Faire meeting scheduled for the same day. Ack! And I still need to go in early and get the Monday morning reports out the door as there is no one else available to put them together. Sigh! It could be a long day.

.....Being the Federal Court though there might be the chance that I may actually sit on a Trial. Every time in the past I was called into Jury Duty I was summarily booted out of the room due to my affiliations with Bill Bogan, who takes care of the breathalizer machines on the Olympic Peninsula. I've been kicked off of trials at least three times now because of that. I'm kinda hoping that it doesn't happen this time. Although it could be problematic if the trial runs through November Crown Council. I'm sure Their Majesties would be cranky with me if I had to miss my own ceremony. I wonder if Their Current Excellencies would be cranky with me if they had to hold on to the Coronets a few weeks (month? years?) longer than expected. :-)

.....Speaking of cranky people, I think we're finally going to get The Crier bank account out of my hair. Master Pyotr has volunteered to make the drive over here so that he and I can sit out at U.S. Bank and wait through the entire process of moving the account over to his name. Wow! What a headache that has been. Every time I've gone into U.S. Bank to start the process they've come up with some new rule or process they neglected to tell me about the time before. Although being the Chronicler's Exchequer isn't exactly a difficult job I think that I'll miss it some.

.....The step-up ceremony has been interesting to write. I immersed myself in Anglo-Saxon writings and then made an attempt to write a ceremony in the same style, using a framework set up by Her Excellency Brighid. I'm finally getting to the point where I'm, almost, satisfied with the results. Although the culling process has been tough. Anyone who knows me knows that I use ten words to describe something that should only take two. So learning brevity along with style, has been quite the learning experience.

.....I think that the Chaucerian verse I've been writing for scroll texts will be more interesting, except for the fact that everything I've written so far sounds more like Dr. Suess than Chaucer. :-) Sigh! I used to think I had the potential to be a writer. Now I think that maybe I'd better consider going back to school and learn how to write! :-)

.....Work has been really interesting. One would think that the Big Boss moving on to 'other things' would make me the happiest person on the planet. And on some levels it has been an incredible relief. He is not altogether 'gone' yet and still spreads terror in liberal amounts. But I don't see him nearly as often as I used to. And it has been a hard thing to learn to 'move on without him' and learn how to think again.

.....I've been working for this guy for almost four year. In that time something I learned to do, but never really noticed, was to not put a whole lot of effort into anything I did directly for him. It was understood on some level that no matter what product I put together, he would hate it, relay to you how stupid you were, and then procede to explain in minute detail what he wanted. Over and over and over and over again. So, the usual 'thing to do' was to throw together whatever reports, charts, writing, etc. that he wanted, without putting a whole lot of effort into it. With the full knowledge that he would hate it and then tell you what he really wanted.

.....But now, I no longer have to produce for him. It is his successor now, my former mid-level boss. And he is so overwhelmed at the moment that he is basically allowing us to run our own show. Ack! We have to think for ourselves, and produce reports that we have to defend ourselves. With no one telling us what to do. From one extreme to the other. I much prefer the current thought process to the former. But it is going to be a little bit before I feel completely comfortable walking on my own again.

.....It's almost 9PM and we've had no trick-or-treaters at all. I guess that the Rhys Monster is going to make out on chocolate this year. All of the candy that neither TBT or myself can't eat will have to be consumed by 'someone'. :-)

.....Almost forgot! Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] signoregio and [livejournal.com profile] krazyfiberkat!!!

.....There are things that I should be doing, but instead I'm sitting here vegetating and pondering on things. I'm also day-dreaming of a life in England. [livejournal.com profile] aelianora gave me a copy of her PhD dissertation yesterday and I've been reading through it.

....."Roman Soldiers and the Roman Army: A Study of Military Life from Archaeological Remains". It is FULL of information and lots of historical facts of Roman England. It was an interesting juxtaposition yesterday as when I sat down to read it I happened to flip on the Tele and the History Channel was showing a special on the history of King Arthur (as narrated by Patrick Stewart). Normally I would just soak in the 'stuff' thrown at me by the History Channel and add it to my stockpile of information on a subject that rather fascinates me. But when the speculation of romantic history was thrown at me, it felt like a McDonalds calorie bomb when compared to the rich information I was reading in this dissertation.

.....I had never realized just the simple history of how many documented Roman Governors there were in Roman Brittain, and that was just a little tidbit of the information in this paper. I thought it fascinating to read the history of Roman conquest, what went into the building of Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall, not to mention the lay-out of the 'typical' Roman fortification. When I first was interested in reading this, I thought that maybe it would be so scholarly that I wouldn't even be able to understand it, much less find myself fascinated by it. But I'm actually finding it to be a good read, with good information in it that really is fascinating to read. I think that if you get the opportunity to browse it, you should.

.....Great work, [livejournal.com profile] aelianora! I'm impressed as all hell. I absolutely would love the opportunity to go on a tour of Hadrian's Wall with you sometime. I'd have a absolutely FANTASTIC time, I know.

.....Yesterday was the great Gold Key purge. It was every bit as painful as we all thought it would be. I was prepared for it and it still wore me out, as I think it did [livejournal.com profile] brighidross as well. I tried my best to stay out of Her way as She dictated what we kept and what we threw away. But my mind kept going to the great purges of the past and my fingers kept itching towards the purge pile to take things off of it and put them back into the keep boxes.

.....I kept remembering the past offices I've held where files and research information and historical 'stuff' would pass from me to a successor only to disappear two or three successors later. It has happened a number of times now, to my great sadness, and I keep feeling the need to hoard stuff at the house in some sort of safe-keeping mode. Hey, the Swedes are creating a bank of all things that grow on this planet in a bid to keep a botanical library on the chance that these items go extinct. Why can't I do the same with Baronial Historical stuff?

.....I know that is not the right approach, but it is part of what I fight a lot internally.

.....Hey, TBT just called and it is time for dinner. Gotta run.
