NORWESCON, Day 2.
Apr. 7th, 2007 10:03 am.....Greetings All,
.....Day two brought about a whole different type of geekdom. Spent several hours playing with consumer robotics. A lot of fun and there are a lot of consumer lever robotics out there for not that bad of price.
.....Spent several hours on a couple of different writing panels. I'm not a brilliant writer, but I'm not a bad writer either and attending these reminded me of how much I enjoy writing and creating new worlds of my own. Re-awakened a hunger for writing again. I always seem to use the excuse that I never have the time, but as was pointed out several times yesterday, if you schedule the time (an hour or so each day) and discipline yourself to keep to your schedule, you'll be back up to full speed writing in no time. I'd like to do that.
.....Spent a couple of hours with someone who does bronze casting in their garage. Went through his entire process. It was great! Learned all of the low budget work-arounds for equipment that costs hundreds of dollars normally. Learned a lot of new tricks for actually handling wax and molds. It was a lot of fun. I've done sand casting and have most of the stuff for it. I've even done a couple of cuttle-bone casts with pewter. Maybe when we have the workshop set up with a good exhaust system, I can pull everything together to do some casting.
.....Went and saw all the new movie previews. Saw some clips from the upcoming Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It looks pretty good. But rather dark. I can see what everyone is saying about how much darker and grittier each Harry Potter book becomes. I saw clips from Spiderman and the new Beowulf re-make coming out. I'm reserving my judgment on that one. The costuming looked very Hollywood, and being a Beowulf snob (NOT only because of the Tolkien connections :-)), I'm ready for disappointment. The new Fantastic Four movie (with the Silver Surfer) looks rather interesting.
.....I'm rather bummed though that I missed the annual Rocky Horror showing last night at midnight. I was rather tired and not feeling hot and crashed a little early. Wah! But the Beloved Laurellen expressed and interest and the Vicarious Theatre Company is supposedly still doing shows somewhere in West Seattle, so we may have to go sometime (BTW, the butler's name is Riff-Raff, Tamm. I don't know why I couldn't remember that last night. :-)).
.....Some good filk stuff yesterday. I know that filk is generally considered as second rate by the SCA crowd, but the people yesterday were doing a really good job with their music and I enjoyed it immensely.
.....Gotta run, see everyone later.
.....Aaron / Arontius.
