Look Fast! It's a Post! :-)
Sep. 21st, 2008 03:23 pm.....It's been a while since I posted anything, but it is a Sunday afternoon and I did a bunch of chores and managed to get a few things done this weekend. So I feel like maybe I have a chance to get caught up on a few things. :-)
.....Work is still super crazy. I'm still fighting like hell to get integrated into the new job. You'd think that since I've had it since February that I would know what I'm doing by now. But that is not the case. Every day I'm confronted with some new chore or assignment that I have no idea where to start or what to do, so I'm seen frantically running around the building asking everyone I think might have some sort of answer for me. The big boss still likes me for some odd reason, but spends half the time basically calling me an idiot for not knowing what it is I'm supposed to be doing. The other half of the time he's loading me up with new assignments. Ack! Your Federal Tax Dollars At Work (tm). No wonder the country is screwed up so much.
.....You'd think that by now I'd be totally demoralized, but things keep coming up that remind me that I'm not thought of as a total dork by everyone. Somehow the word keeps getting out that I'm about to lose my promotion. Sometimes the rumor has it that the Big Boss is going to take it away. Sometimes the rumor is that I'm going to give it up voluntarily. Sometimes the rumor has it that I'm just not going to qualify for it after my six month probation. But whatever this week's rumor is I keep getting courted by one of the supervisors in the Business Office about taking up a position there as a Business Agent. One of the supervisors last week had me meet him in the cafeteria for a drink (he had coffee, I had a Diet Mountain Dew :-)) where he proceded to tell me how rewarding a time I would have working in his office (which dealt with Submarine Projects on the waterfront). Another supervisor actually called me at home and left a message on the answering machine telling me that if I really was considering leaving my current job that he give me a call right away as I would really enjoy a job in his department as a Business Agent dealing in new technologies.
.....Definitely made me smile and talked me off the proverbial ledge a few times. :-)
.....This weekend was the first one in a while where I wasn't 'somewhere else'. I've enjoyed it a lot, but it went away far too quickly. TBT spent a lot of it cleaning and straightening up. I straightened up the Computer Room and took a turn on our bedroom. But the joy of the weekend was working on the e-mail. I went from almost 750 e-mails in the inbox down to 160. That may not sound like a lot to you, but to me that is a huge accomplishment. :-)
.....Turned over the June Faire lists over to the June Faire Board of Directors, specifically to the Chairwoman Anghard Albaness. Definitely with a little sigh of relief. I had been on edge about a location for June Faire XXVII, but there are still three sites in the running. One of them a definite in our pocket (Port Gamble, the city, NOT the uplands). One of them a distinct possibility (a new site outside Poulsbo). And the third still a possibility (the Fairgrounds). Angharad has been Chairwoman before and is more than capable of doing a hugely fantastic job. I'm looking forward to watching it happen this year. Not sure what exactly I'll do this year. But something will come up. I always manage to find SOMETHING to do. :-)
.....The big thing for me this weekend was a meeting with my soon-to-be protege. We're going to make the relationship formal at Yule Feast in court (with Their Excellency's permission). In fact, I think that it is going to end up being three proteges. Which is very interesting considering how trepidatious I was at even taking on a protege in the first place. I think that it is going to be a learning process for me as much as it will be for my proteges. But I'm excited at the possibilities as well. One of my favorite things to do in the SCA is the leading of a Team towards a goal, usually an event. The sense of accomplishment is indescribeable. I think that the goal of helping a protege achieve something that brings them a sense of accomplishment, as well as helps them possibly, eventually, become a member of the Order of the Pelican, will bring a new kind of joy with its own rewards. I'm excited about the prospects.
.....The hardest part now preparing a suitable ceremony that is short, but meaningful, and 'not Norse'. :-)
.....This week leads up to the Kingdom Bardic Championship. I'm judging three entries. All of them sound extremely interesting and I'm enjoying the background research for them.
.....Just have to make it through the week at work. :-)
.....Aaron / Arontius.
