Travels To Iran.
Oct. 13th, 2008 01:50 pm.....I have a friend who lives in Santa Rosa, California, who is an inspiration to me in that she is a Social Activist. A lot of her year is spent in various locations of the world working with local groups in tense regions in the hope of spreading a little peace. Last year was spent in Ceylon working in a Tamil village, interacting with them as they went about their lives and documenting their interactions with the government, who sees the Tamil people as a threat to their existence. There were tense times of which she doesn't like to speak, but she describes the entire experience as extremely meaningful and worthwhile.
.....Linda Sartor is her name. She has an extremely liberal viewpoint, to a degree that I find myself disagreeing with her from time to time. But I'm awfully impressed at the lengths she is willing to go to right the wrongs she perceives in the world.
.....Her latest adventure is a trip to Iran. A place called Yazd (hopefully I'm spelling that correctly). She spoke a lot with the people of the area. The majority of them are what she describes as 'remarkably normal'. There is no fervent hatred of Americans or the West. There is actually a great deal of curiosity and wonder. They see aspects of American culture all around them, both good and bad, and have incredibly wild notions of what it is like to be an American and live in the United States.
.....Linda spent most of her time with an artist of the area who lost his arms during a time of war when the Shah of Iran was still the ruler. He paints with a paint brush in his teeth. Linda plans on posting some pictures of his works, but describes them as rather spectacular.
.....When I read Linda's posts on these trips of hers, it gives me a little hope that maybe the world isn't going to end in anarchy or hatred tomorrow. And maybe I'm a little more left-leaning than some of my friends here in Kitsap County, but I'm just a little more hopeful when I think that maybe someone with a left leaning bent might be President of the United States in just a handful of months. Instead of spreading a lot of fear and hate, maybe we could see a little hope and joy.
.....Just a thought.
.....Aaron / Arontius.
