.....It still feels strange not to be processing hundreds of e-mails on July Coronation. :-) But it feels good to be able to slow down a bit and just take things easy for a change. Only a handful of message, mainly dealing with Lost and Found items. For some reason people left behind a lot more stuff then normal at J.C. The Constabulary might pull in some good money just off of this event alone at their yearly Lost-and-Found Auction next year.

.....Started work on taking back control of the jungle last night. Pulled out the hedge trimmer. The battery was dead so it is recharging for tonight's attack. But didn't let that stop me, I went ahead and started pulling weeds and dead plants from the side yard next to the driveway.

.....Tonight the hedges are mine!!! They are going to look bare and ugly by the time I get done with them, but it will only be a temporary thing until some new buds grow in. It is really hard to kill this hedge. I can see why the owners had juniper planted below them. It was the only thing keeping them in check from expanding like kudzu. I hate juniper though, so it went early and now the hedges are working their way out into the road. I think the neighbors are starting to fret. :-)

.....Putting notes together for the final July Coronation report. We did pretty good in income and attendance. Aelianora is still working up the numbers. But we had over 1200 people come in through gate. We grossed somewhere over $18,000. I'm pretty sure that includes merchant fees and pre-registration, but Aelianora will tell me for sure. But this really makes me feel better. Before the event I was worried enough about our expenses that I decided to pick up the cost of the scooter and half of the rented house myself. But I feel no qualms now about folding those expenses back into J.C. Especially considering how handy both items were to the event.

.....OMG, the scooter made such a big difference to how well J.C. ran. At the typical Port Gamble event, I'm usually exhausted half way through Friday with my dozenth or so trip up Eric Hill. With the scooter you can zip around everywhere and get errands done, supplies delivered, people dropped off, and still have the energy to think and do other things. The scooter is the way to go for any event at Port Gamble. I think that it should be come an automatic expense, like the U-Haul, for any large event held there.

.....It'll be interesting to see how the June Faire board shakes out for 2007. I would like to keep my same position as Marketplace Liaison, if only to shepherd the Marketplace through its first 'Juried' Selection Process. I'm very interested in developing the process and making it work. I'd also like to make up for the mistake I made this year in trying to put too many merchants on the hill. The merchants are a very fickle lot. I barely survived this year with my scalp intact. :-)

.....But at this time their are no candidates willing to take on Chairman of the June Faire Board. It is a difficult job and the Customary says that you either have to have been a member of the board in the past or have autocrated June Faire sometime in the past. That definitely narrows the playing field. We'll see. Since J.C. was successful, maybe that'll inspire a few people to step forward.

.....One thing that very much surprised me at July Coronation was Sir Daniel. He did spend all the time that he promised he would at Gold Key. But what surprised me was how much attention he gave to those of the Modern World who wanted to know something about the SCA. He was very informative and objective to a large degree. And took a real interest in answering all questions put to him. I was impressed. He came across to me much differently than he does on the e-mail lists. I may not agree with Sir Daniel on many issues (well, let's be honest, on most issues :-)), but I think that in his own unique way he cares about what happens to the SCA as much as any of the rest of us. What a concept!

.....Ruminating on what to do next. There is a lot to consider. But I'm going to enjoy doing nothing as long as I can do so. But the Tolkien Word Battle and the Sonnet Battle are beginning to loom large in my thoughts. Need to engage the brain in that direction.

.....Hope everyone has a good day. :-)

actually, your experience with Sir D is really him. I've known him for about 15 years. I think he's smokin' crack some days and his communicaiton skills (or lack thereof) make me want to throttle him but you'll not find a more tenacious champion or defender out there.

he really does what he does because he feels he's defending someone who cant defend themselves. and he totally is willing to put his money where his mouth is, unlike others.

he has my respect for that. again, I really wish he could communicate his message better but there you go.....

Yeah... what she said. I was typing up something very similar. Known him for a long time. He knows the drill and when motivated is a truly hard worker. Too bad that he sometimes encompasses all the very worst traits of Dragon-kind.

You did know he was a Dragon, yes? :)

I was surprised by Sir Dan at July Coronation. He approached me respectfully, asked me for a favor and then thanked me afterward. In person he seems so calm and reasonable. I think he should be banned from computer use since he turns into a 450lb gorilla when using his keyboard.

he turns into a gorilla when he thinks he is defending someone who cannot defend themselves

new people
moderns
Aveloc
people overlooked by peerages

he recently went into a Dan style tirade on the all peers list about how is sucks that a peerage discussion can be shot down by one person.

cuz he had just done that and felt really bad about it and wanted to see that it never happened again.

heart is totally in the right place. methods? oh boy. do THOSE need soem work....

unfortunately, with crappy methods, its unlikely that he'll get the effect he wants, no matter how noble the thought behind it :(

For as long as I have known him - which has been since we both got into the SCA at about the same time, lo these many years ago, his methods have never changed. He's always done this kind of thing.

Before the advent of elists, he and I would sit down and chat about stuff over a beer and a campfire and I agreed with most of what he was saying but then how we both went about affecting change went in radically different directions. And like a big, dumb Dragon, he just doesn't understand what the problem is with his methods. All he knows is that this or that needs a champion! And, by golly, he's the man for the job. Admirable, in a way.

After the advent of elists, before I went away, he and I had long private email sessions where I attempted to illustrate the problems with his methods but which he took to mean that I had a problem with the things he was working to change. He is not good with email; he, moreso than others, reads a lot of emotion into email that may or may not have been the original intent of the author. And then he runs with it. And after he's got his head, it's hard to reign him in.

So, unfortunately, he and I are no longer buds, and that is totally my fault. I threw up my hands and walked away. I vacillate on whether or not I should step up to the plate and mend the fence so I could maybe help him with said methods of delivery. I think I kinda owe it to him (as a fellow expat Artimisian) to at least try, even if he doesn't feel there is anything wrong with his methods. I've known him long enough that maybe I at least should try... see, vacillation. Thing is, I have a real problem with him now, where before it was just with his methods. And that real problem, despite being R&D'd, isn't going to go away.

yeah, you have that extra "complication" in there, too, dont you?

sigh

If he trounces on me, I write him privately and we work it out, but while he's pefectly reasonable privately or in person, he really doesnt do that public email thing so well.

thing is, he's a grown up. he doesnt see a problem with it. and I'm coming to the point in my dotage where folks who pride themselves on being blunt need to be able to take as well as give, as far as I'[m concerned.

again, every time I've had a conversation about thiat kind of thing with him, he's always perfectly reasonable. I'm not sure what aliens eat his brain when he does public stuff...

hey in less than a week I'm having a milestone birthday, man.

I think I'm entitled to use the term dotage ;)

Happy belated!! You wear it so well!!

I hit my 50 in January. Less of a shocker than I thought it would be, really.

JF board

Master Arontius, how can you say there are no candidates for Board Chairman, when the call has *not* been put out for letters of interest? There may be people out there interested, but don't know they can say so yet!!! I have a problem with that.

I have heard (from Ellen) that Master Ralg was interested in being Chairman - I would call that a very viable candidate. Perhaps someone should tell him to apply, hmmmm?

I agree that you should be merchant Liaison again - for all those reasons you state. It's easier second time around (speaking from experience, here, and two-time Merchant Liaison for JFB - and no, I *don't* want to do it again.)

Oh, come on, commit him...he's not here to defend himself! That's the best time to volunteer someone for a project!
