SeaTac Airport On Sunday Evening.
Apr. 25th, 2010 07:23 pm.....I fly out on American Airlines later this evening. But you couldn't tell that from the ticket counter. It is deserted. Guess I'll do a little catching up on Live Journal.
.....I had a good day at the Baronial Arts Day yesterday. I spent most of it trying to fashion an ocarina out of red clay brought by RedBow. My first attempt was spectacularly unsuccessful. The second attempt was marginally so, and the only reason we were able to get sound out of it was that RedBow did most of my leg-work for me.
.....I do have to say that I actually enjoyed the process. If I'd ended up making something myself that actually worked, I would have enjoyed it more.
.....We started out by rolling out balls of red clay and then making pinch-pots out of them. When they were of relatively the same size and shape we scored the edges and worked the bowls together into a sphere. This was a little bit of work as you had to work the seam into a solide shape without deforming your sphere completely.
.....Then you made a mouthpiece that was attached to a point on your sphere. A hole was inserted into the mouthpiece and the fipple cut. This proved to be the most demanding portion of the process as the angular cut of the fipple had to be in almost perfect alignment and at an almost perfect distance from the opening of the mouthpiece. And finally, the hole for the fipple had to be of the exact same size as the mouthpiece hole. This was difficult!
.....On my second ocarina, I experimented a lot with placement of holes. The directions that RedBow brought did state that placement of the holes was more to the suiting of your hands then it was for actual tunage. This pretty much proved to be a true statement. Although even my second ocarina was frustrating in that any more than three holes resulted in no sound.
.....But I learned a lot on the process and want to do it again. I have played a couple of RedBows ocarinas and I really like the sound of them. So I will keep persuing.
.....We had Indian food at Gandhi's twice! We went there on Friday night for a date with TBT and myself, and then for the buffet lunch on Saturday. This proved to be my undoing. My gastro-intestinal tract does NOT like heavy doses of curry. I hardly slept Saturday night, and I'm still feeling a bit 'jumpy' today. But I think it'll actually help the flight in that I'm now really tired. I don't really care where they stick me on the airplane. I just want to go to sleep. :-)
.....Wish TBT were going with me! I'll be gone for two weeks. I was surprized when I realized that this will be the longest amount of time that TBT and I have been separated since we were married. Maybe she'll enjoy the break! :-)
.....I'll be in Indianapolis tomorrow for a week long conference in the back country of Indiana. Then on Friday another plane will take me down to Jacksonville, Florida. I feel like a real traveller. :-)
.....Still have to finish my Winter Quarter Seneschal Report. But I have it electronically, so I'll do it sometime this week. My Deputy Seneschal quit on me here a couple of weeks ago, so TBT offered to stand in my place for the May Business Meeting. She'll do fine.
.....We have officially lost our Chronicler, which is sad. She is having all kinds of drama in her life. I hope that things settle down for her sometime soon. But now we need to find someone to pick up the reins and move forward. I'd sure like to see 'The Flames' finally go all (or at least, mostly) electronic.
.....My battery is almost dead. Need to move and fins a plug in. :-)
.....Bye for now.
.....Aaron / Arontius.
