Hmmm, this was on the Tolkien LJ feed...

"University of Washington Tolkien Lecture Series

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2007/11/15/28047-university-of-washington-tolkien-lecture-series/

Amber writes to let us know that UW History Professor Dr. Robin Stacey is presenting a 5 part lecture series examining the life and works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The series is set to start on January 15, and more information will be posted on Dec 1 to the UW Alumni Website."

...I might be in Seattle more than I thought I would in January. :-)

Dr. Stacey was one of my Thesis advisors for my degree. She is Teh Bomb. She and her husband, Dr. Robert Stacey, are the core of the Medieval area of the UW History department, and they are brilliant.

She's got two books out on Welsh and Brehon law, if you're into that kind of thing.

Maybe. They're interesting (if a bit dry and academic) reading all on their own, anyway.

I've got her first one (The Road to Judgement), which I'll happily loan you. The second, Dark Speech: The Performance of Law in Early Ireland (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/081223989X/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I26JIPRKCYE5GW&colid=3GPT9SUV0W19F) is available on Amazon.

Definitely seconding this -- I had Bob Stacey as an undergrad for a Medieval England class, and Robin for an Early Medieval class as a post-grad. Robin's class was great -- she really knows her stuff, and not just the Welsh/Brehon law, either. I've still got my copy of Gregory of Tours' History of the Franks with all the note tabs on it from the class. So many it literally doubles the thickness of the book.

I had them both, too - I was a glutton for punishment and did two senior theses, one with each of them. And? I kept all the books. Including Gregory of Tours. ;)

GEEKGeekgeek.

I wish I had been there longer, and started the major sooner.

Way cool -- I didn't do history as an undergrad (archaeology for me), but I've still got all of the books from Bob Stacey's class. I think all except the Gregory of Tours from Robin's class went by the wayside in my great purge of disgust after leaving grad school...
