.....You know, there are those movies that you remember fondly from your early days in your SCA career that sort of introduced you to the concept of playing in the Middle Ages while living in the Modern World (tm). You know, those movies like 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' and 'Lion in Winter'.

.....Well, I stumbled across one that I'm amusedly watching on T.V. right now that, absurdly enough, falls into that category. It is 'Cutthroat Island'. A truly god-awful pirate movie starring Gina Davis.

.....It doesn't even try to be historically accurate in any way. And is definitely out of period. But has that 'over the top' flavor that is very SCA in feeling. I remember when this was actually playing in the local theatre when a large group of us from Dragon's Laire all went to a showing. For months after that we were throwing bad pirate quotes at each other and setting up pirate companies.

.....I know that Her Excellency Brighid has a tough time with the pirate crowd. But, you know, that have a rather long and involved history in the SCA. You may wince like crazy at how much they do NOT fit into the fabric of our SCA Middle Ages. But you have to admit that they add a lot of style and colour to our game. :-)

.....Now, we just have to channel that style and colour to something a bit more historically accurate. :-)

.....I do have to admit that Gina Davis looked pretty good going after buried treasure and battling evil pirate Captains and wicked British governors. :-)
