.....So, May Crown next year is slated for an incredibly far distant universe known as 'Avacal', in Montengarde to be exact (Calgary, Alberta). :-) There was a group of friends to whom I was listening last night who mentioned that they were going to carpool themselves to the event.

.....They also mentioned that maybe Aquaterra or Madrone was going to charter a bus (or maybe it was a group of people who lived in one of those Baronies) with seats going for $150 (I think?). I'm not sure that I'd like to do that as it ties me to their schedule. The last time I took a train to Adiantum for Twelfth Night I enjoyed the views and the seating was comfortable, but it took sooooo long to get there and get home that I couldn't really enjoy it.

.....Not sure how much airfare is there. Will have to check that out, although I'm sure it isn't cheap.

.....Anyone else thinking of making the trip up there? Have you thought about what you were going to do yet? I'm thinking that maybe Heather (the van) would probably make the trip O.K. there and back, but I'd better get her checked out and repairs done between now and then.

.....Or maybe renting some sort of van / large car / station wagon might be the way to go? I've done that for several trips to Estrella and enjoyed it immensely as I never worried about the abuse to the transportation. :-)

.....I'm thinking that I'd like to go as I've never traveled to an Avacal event before and would very much like to do so. I think that the trip alone might be fun. I'd better make sure to budget some leave time between now and then.

.....If we go through Montana, maybe I could convince TBT to go as well? :-)

.....Aaron / Arontius.

Point The First: Traveling to see the Avacal Peeps would be awesome but I'm not sure about on a bus with fifty of our closest pals. I'd rather we either rent a car or take the van.

Point The Second: Please to be liberating some printer paper today?

Sigh. After the Disney Adventure this summer, the Great Move of Sister in Law which zapped us unexpectely, and the potential of Rich going to Estrella, I can't see how we could afford another trip that far away. If it happens, it would just be Rich, since May Crown is during the school year.

We even have to put off purchasing the new couch, because the washing machine died this week and we had to buy a new one. So spending is going to be curtailed for a while.

We've made the trip several times. It's a good bunch of people.
Doesn't look like we will be this time though.
Points:
  • The Dinosaur Museum at Drumheller is worth the stop, as is the one at Bynum, etc.
  • When we do make the trip, we always combine it with a trip to Montana, since you almost have to go through one to get to the other.
  • If you think gas is expensive here, you haven't bought gas there
  • You (and the small boy) haven't seen Glacier Park
  • The weather should be warm in the daytime and cool at night, but it could be anything from hot to snowing
  • one more thing...

If I can go, I'll have to fly. No other way to do it. And if I'm flying somewhere in May, I'd like it to be to the Midieval Congress in Kalamazoo. Cuz I'm off to Florida the first of June, and then Pennsic in August...so yeah. Not sure, but I'd love to be there!

The easiest route is I-90 to Coeur d'Alene, ID, then up through Cranbrook & Fernie - not through Montana. It's about 10-12 hours from Seattle if you go that way and drive like I do. The event is actually about 2 hours SOUTH of Calgary, so Drumheller would be quite out of your way (but a lovely side trip if you have the time). Having done the bus thing to a 12th Night in Lionsmarche, I'm a big fan of driving myself and having that flexibility, with no sick ferrets stinking up the place.

I won't be going, but it should be a fun event. :)

We're thinking of making it into a family vacation -- taking a week and renting a small rv or camping van and going through glacier, banff, lake louise and hitting the dinosaur musuem . . .

ooh, bus trip. That brings back ancient memories. Graf Berek was king and it was at the end of spring break or something. I had driven down to San Diego to visit Raph, drove 24 hours to get home, signed up for classes, then drove like heck to Portland to get on the bus to Montegarde. I went from 90 degrees to minus 10 at night and I don't remember the altitude change, but I do remember being REALLY sick.

It was actually alovely ride. Lots of story telling and sing alongs. Though there was a weird moment when i realized that if the bus crashed, pretty much all of the officers and royalty of An Tir would go down with it.

I wonder if there is a train route. That could be fun.

oh my! that was 1984 - one of the very best road trips ever! The bus came from Portland, to Seattle, to Spokane, then north. Heh, a group of us were directly behind the driver during part of the return ride, talking as one does about culinary stuff and banquets and redactions. The driver turned around at one point and said, "You guys have been talking about food for 4 hours! Don't you ever talk about anything else?" And we laughed and just continued chattering away. He was cool, tho; he took us into Calgary before the event so that we could visit the armor exhibit at the Glenbow Museum. It was September, and I remember that at night it was cold enough to ice a bucket of water.

    Thouse were some days....
